How Do I Know God’s Purpose for My Life?
Five Steps to Finding Your Calling
Introduction
Are you searching for God’s purpose for your life and feeling stuck? Many Christian women over 40 wonder, ‘How do I know if I’m following God’s plan?’ This blog series will help you navigate that question with Bible verses about purpose and steps to discovering God’s will for your life.”
Let’s get started finding answers and inspiration.
Step 1: Discovering God's Purpose Starts with Knowing Who He Is
When you are looking for answers, it is best to start by remembering who God is and who God says you are.
First, look at bible scriptures that tell you who God is. These are some I find most helpful and my thoughts in italics. I suggest you take the time to write your own thoughts in a journal and/or in the comments:
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. ESV
This verse says it all! We know God is God because nothing would exist without him. This verse always makes me want to jump for joy. What does this verse say to you?
John 4:24
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. ESV
Worshiping God is an expression of our faith in him and it can be in our spirit and/or a physical outward expression. We can’t worship God any other way than in truth. If we don’t believe in God, it is impossible to worship him in truth. This verse tells us God is in spirit and in truth. This is a great reassurance that God is who he says he is. Please share your thoughts in the comments about this verse and what feelings it evokes in you.
Colossians 1:13-14
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. ESV
Do these verses get your blood pumping? Wow! God has redeemed us, forgiven our sins and removed us from the domain of darkness. God is our redeemer! It clearly says this in the Bible.
Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. ESV
You know this is true if you think back to the times you have made a plan to change a behavior and immediately, an opportunity lands in your lap to ignore that plan. Come on, you know you have been there. God knows our thoughts and our intentions in our heart. No one else has access to our thoughts or our heart. Please share a recent experience you have had with this type of situation.
Isaiah 44:6
Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last, besides me there is no god. ESV
There isn’t much else that needs to be said here.
John 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ESV
This one is similar to the verse above. It states very clearly who God is. Are you excited about these verses yet? I have read them so many times and every time I revisit them I get excited all over again.
Romans 5:8
…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ESV
God loves us so much, he sacrificed his son for us.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God[a] may be complete, equipped for every good work. ESV
God equips us to share his word and to serve others.
